New date lecture Mikael Höök – 3rd of December

Hej,

Luckily we managed to arrange a new date for the guest lecture by Mikael Höök within the regular course schedule. Mikael will now visit the class on Tuesday, the 3rd of December, from 17.15 to 19.30. He will lecture about Peak Oil and Future Energy Scenarios, a subject which should not be excluded from a course on Global Challenges and Sustainable Futures.

We will inform you about the room for the lecture as soon as possible,

Ben and Heleen

Selected Debate Topics Posted

Hi!

Thanks for sharing your debate topics. It has been interesting to see what you have come up with and we recommend that you have a look at the forum as well, some interesting topics and references are posted there. We have selected a couple of topics which we would like to discuss next week during the student debate night, these are posted above under 'Assignments.'

Active participation during this evenings is a requirement to pass the course, therefore we expect that you will all contribute to the debate night with your point of view and argument(s). We have posted these topics in advance to give you the opportunity to prepare, so please use this time.

Looking forward to some interesting debates,

Ben and Heleen

Current events and student debate – deadline 5th of November

Hi,

This is just a message to clarify some things regarding the mini-deadline for the 'current events and student debate' you have seen on your schedule. Above under assignments you will find the instructions for both the preparations as well as for the debate night itself. Please post your debate topic on the course forum in a reply to the post we placed there earlier today before the 5th of November. Remember to connect your debate topic to something which has recently happened locally or globally which you think is relevant for the course.

After this unplanned break/movie night we hope to see you all again next week.

Interesting video on Climate Change and Water Conflicts

Hej again,

We have found this interesting video on Climate Change and Water Conflicts which connects very well to the lecture by Florian Krampe next week:

http://e360.yale.edu/feature/when_the_water_ends_africas_climate_conflicts/2331/

Although the video maybe oversimplifies a very complex conflict it is another good example of how global changes can have big impacts on local communities.

See you next week!

Ben and Heleen

PS. Next week we will meet in Blåsenhus again, room 12:004

IMPORTANT – Tomorrow’s Lecture Cancelled (Tue 29th Oct)

Hej hej allihopa,

We have some sad news... (and some good)... unfortunately we've had to cancel tomorrow's lecture with Mikael Höök at short notice. We are trying to reschedule his lecture for later in the semester as it's a topic that we know has been of interest. This new date is not yet confirmed but we will inform you as soon as possible when we know.

The good news is... instead of the lecture tomorrow night, we'll be showing No Impact Man (trailer here) in the CEMUS library. We'll start getting together and forming the comfy chairs into a mini cinema from 17:15 and start the film around 17:30.

Please note, this is not mandatory but we saw this as a good opportunity to show a film/documentary that we think suits the course well. If you choose not to show up, remember this is a good time to work on your draft report - the deadline is this Friday.

Heleen & Ben

P.S. Please share this with your class mates as we'd hate for people to show up. We've sent an email to everyone and posted this elsewhere to catch as many as possible.

Draft Report Requirements

Hej everyone,

We received some questions regarding the group draft report you will need to send in on the 1st of November. Here is a list of things which need to be included (as is also written in the project instructions):

- Title page
- Table of content
- Introduction
- The individual texts on each capital from the perspective of the chosen role-play character
- First ideas for suggested solutions and innovations
- Draft discussion
- Draft conclusion
- List of references
- Appendices (if applicable)

If you wish to book a meeting with us to discuss your draft report please do so on time, it will help us to plan all the work a bit more efficiently.

Good luck with your projects!

Ben and Heleen

PS. Please note that tonight we will have class in Betty Pettersson-Salen, Blåsenhus, again

Christmas Calendar Competition Reminder

Christmas is a time of joy and being with loved ones. However, present-day Christmas traditions have come to entail profligacy and reckless consumption. A change must happen. How can we create new traditions? This is where you and the CEMUS CHRISTMAS CALENDAR COMPETITION come into the picture. We want you to share your best tips for a more sustainable lifestyle. How can we consume less but still spread fun and joy at Christmas time? What tips do you have for more sustainable living, at Christmas or the whole year around?

The 23 best suggestions will be selected and presented in our online CHRISTMAS CALENDAR, where a new film will be released every day from December 1st. Are you up for the challenge?

There are only 2 rules to follow:

  1. We want you to present your suggestion in a 2-3min long video
  2. It has to be a positive example towards a more sustainable lifestyle that can easily be copied by everyone – even those not really interested in sustainable development.

Deadline for the competition is November 17th. Upload your video to Youtube or Vimeo and send the link of the video to cecilia.esbjornsson@csduppsala.uu.se

Results from Workshop II

Hej everyone,

We wanted to thank you for your contributions, reflections and energy last week. For those of you who missed the workshop we would like to share the outcome of the 'Capital Discussions' here. Different groups of students discussed the strengths and weaknesses of each capital in order to understand the capitals better. These findings were then summarized in posters. Please have a look at the outcomes and see if you can learn something from these discussions (apologies for the poor quality):

Workshop 2_Posters

Also please note that the lecture on the 15th of October will be in Blåsenhus, room 12.004 (where we met for the 1st workshop) at 17.15.

We hope to see you all tomorrow!

Workshop 2 Preparation

Hej everyone,

As the previous post already informed you, we will have our second workshop next week Tuesday. In order to get the most out of this workshop the capitals should already be divided among the group members. Also, by now the group must have decided on one specific city.

Ideally you will also have decided upon an interesting role play character for your capital and have some good insights on the challenge your group will be working on. However, we are aware that we moved the workshop to one week earlier and that your group might not have come this far yet. We will try to be a bit flexible during the workshop.

Once again, please note that this workshop will take place in Norrlands I & II in Geocentrum!

Good luck with the 30 Day Challenge, there are still a couple of hours left to send your assignment 🙂
